LAHORE: The Pakistan Wrestling Federation (PWF) on Tuesday announced the launch of the largest national wrestling competition, Rustam Pakistan, scheduled to take place in February 2025.
According to the PWF, all wrestling units across the country have been instructed to submit the names of two wrestlers from their respective regions by January 31, 2025, to ensure their participation in the event.
While the initial rounds of Rustam Pakistan are set to commence in February, the date for the tournament's grand finale remains unannounced.
This initiative aims to elevate wrestling in Pakistan and provide a platform for talented athletes to showcase their skills on a national stage.
Last year, Pakistan’s standout wrestler and Commonwealth Games silver medallist Zaman Anwar clinched the prestigious Rustam-e-Pakistan title for the first time in his career.
He defeated Bahawalpur-born Mohammad Asif Mochi in an electrifying final held at Punjab Stadium, Lahore.
As recognition of his triumph, Zaman Anwar was awarded the Rustam-e-Pakistan title along with a cash prize of Rs1 million. The runner-up, Mohammad Asif, received Rs500,000.
The event was organized by the PWF in collaboration with the Sports Board Punjab (SBP) and the Punjab government.
The competition featured 32 intense bouts involving the country’s top wrestlers, creating an electrifying atmosphere leading up to the final.
Speaking at the event, Dr. Tufail of SBP highlighted the cultural and historical significance of wrestling in Pakistan.
“This event lasted for around four months and showcased our traditional wrestling heritage. Wrestling has a rich history here, as before Partition, the prestigious Rustam-e-Hind competition used to be held in Lahore,” Dr. Tufail remarked.
He further emphasized the importance of promoting traditional sports in Pakistan.
“We plan to include wrestling in our next development program. This competition is a milestone, and we aim to expand its reach. In the future, we will explore opportunities to invite foreign wrestlers to participate and make this event truly global.”
